Major in French 2013-2014

The French department reserves the right to change major requirements at any time. Please check with the French department or the CU Boulder catalog for the most current listing of requirements. You are subject to the requirements in effect at the time you declare your major as an Arts & Sciences degree seeking student.

In addition to the requirements of the College of Arts and Sciences, students must complete a minimum of 30 upper-division hours in French. Students wishing to pursue an Honors major should also consult the Honors requirements listed below.

FREN 2120 or its equivalent is the prerequisite for admission to courses required for the major.

  • FREN 1010 (5) Beginning French 1
  • FRE 111 (5) French Language I
  • FREN 1020 (3) Beginning French 2
  • FRE 112 (5) French Language 2
  • FREN 2110 (3) Second Year French Grammar Review and Reading 1
  • FRE 211 (3) French Language III
  • FREN 2120 (3) Second Year French Grammar Review and Reading 2 or its equivalent is the prerequisite for admission to courses required for the major.
  • FRE 212 (3) French Language IV

  • FREN 3010 (3) French Phonetics and Pronunciation
  • FREN 3050 (3) French Composition 1
  • FREN 3060 (3) French Composition 2
  • FREN 3100 (3) Critical Reading and Writing in French Literature
  • FREN 3110 (3) Main Currents of French Literature 1
  • FREN 3120 (3) Main Currents of French Literature 2

Four or more courses at the 3000 or 4000 level, of which 9 hours must be at the 4100 level or above (12 credit hours)

  • FREN 4990 (3) Senior Seminar (including a senior essay and oral presentation, except where a student elects to present a senior honors thesis).

Note: The seminar runs concurrently with one of the three courses taken at the 4100 level or above. See departmental brochure for details.

Honors Requirements:

Honors candidates must meet all of the requirements for the major plus the following:

  • FREN 3200 (3) Introduction to Literary Theory
  • One semester of independent study (3 credit hours)

Note: The semester of independent study is taken concurrently with FREN 4980, and is devoted to one-on-one work on the senior honors thesis with a faculty advisor. See departmental brochure for details.
